I get it in Australia they have an issue with foreign drivers on the wrong side of the road while they are on holiday.
But RAF Croughton is, ‘communication hub’, with hundreds or personnel and usually stationed here for months or even a year or two, so why can’t they remember what side to drive on?

A police chief has asked to meet the commander of the RAF base near where Harry Dunn died, to discuss cars being driven on the wrong side of the road.
Mr Dunn, 19, was hit by a car driven by Anne Sacoolas, who left for the US claiming diplomatic immunity.
Video has now emerged of a car being driven on the wrong side of the road near RAF Croughton on Friday night.
Northamptonshire Chief Constable Nick Adderley said these events “cannot keep happening”.
A police vehicle was also struck by a car on the wrong side of the same road in October.
The footage that was captured on Friday shows a blue BMW having to brake sharply on a road near the base.
In a statement, the chief constable said: “I do not underestimate how much of a concerning incident this was and how much worse it could have been, especially considering the circumstances in which 19-year-old Harry Dunn tragically died.
“This is compounded by the fact that yesterday, myself and Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold were made aware of another incident in Northampton in which a police vehicle was struck in early October by a vehicle also driving on the wrong side of the road.
“Thankfully, there were no injuries.
“I want to be absolutely clear on the fact that these incidents just cannot keep happening.”
He said he had requested a meeting with officials from the base to discuss road safety and that he expected it to take place next week.
With the case of Harry Dunn’s death by Anne Sacoolas while driving on the wrong side of the road, the U.S. has said about the U.K. s request to extradite her as .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The United States has criticised the UK’s request to extradite an American accused of killing motorcyclist Harry Dunn, calling it “highly inappropriate”.
Mr Dunn, 19, died after being hit by a car allegedly driven by suspect Anne Sacoolas, who left the country for the US claiming diplomatic immunity.
The Home Office !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to extradite her to the UK.
The extradition request is sent via the British Embassy to the US State Department.
A lawyer will then decide whether it falls under the dual-criminality treaty, where the alleged offence is a crime in both countries and carries a prison sentence of at least a year.
The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years’ imprisonment, although this is usually reserved for the most serious cases.
The US may reject the request for extradition, arguing that Mrs Sacoolas is still entitled to diplomatic immunity.

This is going to get messy, especially as the U.S. DoD is about to spend $520million on the site this year.

It’s sort of amazing the way we can drive as an automatic reaction and frankly that more stupid stuff doesn’t happen.
In any event, shortly after my mom moved back from the UK, she got pulled over for driving on the left...

But this is outside a base which is loads of protesters outside wanting Anne to return to the U.K., there would know what the protest is about and there are these signs

She should return, she doesn’t have immunity.
Install a fast reacting collapsible spike strip that allows cars to drive one way safely , but kills the tires if they go the wrong way. You see them a lot at rental car companies . Also, have a tire repair shop right across the street that charges a shitload and gives some of the proceed s to Harry’s parents.

Well you could call it highly inappropriate for Anne to drive on the wrong side of the road and kill Harry. I’m sure Harry would agree it highly inappropriate for his life to of been cut so short due to her driving the way she did. But the American government sees the word inappropriate differently I assume.

I think the BMW was just using “racing line” for the corner (outside-inside-outside) and hit the brakes when the driver saw the other car. Idiotic but not necessarily a foreign driver.
In my country a road that is barely wide enough for two cars would be 30 km/h
at ma
ximum.

Whether he wants a trade deal or not, the family and friends of the deceased won’t be leaving this alone for some time yet.
To be honest, not many want a deal with the U.S. with trump in office.

They need arrows painted on the fucking foreheads.
I live near all the embassies in Canberra. Squeaky bum time every time I go through there late at night cause I’ll get some tired diplomat whose forgotten what country they’re in.

Both cars were going low speeds.
And yes, foreign driver, the police confirmed it was a diplomatic car linked to RAF Croughton.
Using the ‘racing line’ is one thing, but you only do it when you can see the exit is clear, eg no cars, pedestrians or obstructions of any can’t not just at the exit of the bend but further afield.

They are not going fast but BMW seems to be taking the “
inside line” at the apex. On
curvy and empty (appearing
)
roads this is quite common. But that road is ridiculously narrow so likely most drivers
stay in the middle if the
visibility is good and there are
n’t any other road us
ers to be seen.

That is a common country road width here.
Enough space for two to pass.
Yes most adopt the centre line on these narrow country roads where the visibility all round is great, low or no hedges or dry stone walls, but at a bend, always go bad to your own side.

If this was a matter of the driver trying to trace a racing line, knowingly, temporarily borrowing the oncoming side, I think he would have jumped back towards his own side of the road
immediately
upon seeing oncoming traffic. But when the camera car comes into view, the BMW doesn’t react like that at all. His reaction was apparently to hug the
right
side of the road and stop. He doesn’t even try to get back on his proper side of the road until he sees the camera car
firmly stop o
n its proper
side
.

Not necessarily. I could easily see someone freeze up and fall back to long-held habits in a situation like that.
I don’t know how long I’d have to drive in the UK before I’d instinctively hug the left margin in an emergency. 30 years of habit are hard to break.

That’s
why
I think he’s taking the right side out of driving habit, not as part
of trying to trace a racing line.

I was wondering how good the signage was. That seems pretty good to me, so it sounds like a case of a dumbass who can’t drive.
The claiming diplomatic immunity bit is a load of crap. Unless she was carrying classified material with her, it's really shitty to claim immunity while in the territory of a very close ally. But what can you expect when the country is run by a shithead.

Brits do this all the time in the states. I had a wrong way driver come at me on the SeaTac (Seattle’s airport) departures ramp, and watched a driver navigate the roundabout near my house in Seattle the wrong way before jumping a median in a panic and destroying their brand new S-Class Merc.
In DC
people turn on to the wrong side of the median ALL THE TIME. Florida is even worse during tourist season
.
It happens wherever people switch what side of the road is “right.”

That lady will never face a trial, even if Trump is gone in the fall. A trade deal is more likely, and the odds of that are zero, even if a Democrat replaces Trump

Her husband’s in the CIA and there’s an agreement that
CIA staff at that air base (which isn’t just an air base) can claim diplomatic immunity. The US government can waive the immunity but their policy is not to.

It’s not about gravitas in world affairs, it’s about doing the right thing. Over the years the British government has extradited both. British and foreign nationals from it’s shores.
Both the U.K. and U.S. bang on about this special relationship, this shared history, these shared values, etc... and this is what we get.

Ye', I get that, we get loads of tourists driving on the wrong side, several even film themselves doing it. These are people that now live here, granted some may of only been here weeks but they leave a base with signs up saying to stay left, more have been added since Harry was killed, they've even driven through a protest outside the base about having Anne return and what it was about.

It turns out she didn’t have the right to claim immunity. At the scene she admitted driving on the wrong side, she didn’t claim immunity at that time, later she did and while the U.K. police were verifying it, she absconded to the U.S.. U.S. officials later admitted the right to immunity wasn’t he’s.
The U.S. would likely of waived it, but as she had already returned to the U.S., the U.S. don’t want to be seen to get extradite one of their own for whatever reason.

There are more incentives right now for the US to let this lady avoid trial than there are for the US to send her back. People in the US military/government and their families don’t like getting posted to the UK, so letting her face trial would make assigning people to those posts far more difficult, as it’s one of those errors that people here can see themselves making (they’ve seen all the pictures of the “look left” signs on the crosswalks). Sure they could help out the UK government politically by sending her back, but the US government has rightly concluded that the UK government will sit down and take it - as they badly need a trade deal.
It’s a cold hard calculus, especially for the poor victim and his family,
but sadly, it’s reality.

I’m sure it still happens 15 or 20 times per day, even now. Just there’s probably not a dashcam about.
They really should make the exits
of that base
roundabouts to remind folks and get them started on the correct side of the road. It looks like it’s just a T-junction, so I’m not surprised these issues would happen.

I have lived and worked all over North America - Washington drivers are amongst the most courteous. If anything they’re too polite. It’s the tourists and new arrivals that are trouble.
Though t
